my phone setup
i'm trying to practice what i'm calling digital minimalism - it's not quite literal minimalism, but it involves using technology more intentionally - and not being constantly connected to the whims of the web via social media and timesink apps like that
this is the reason i'm using a samsung galaxy flip 2 - it's a flip phone, made by samsung that runs android 7 with a touch screen (can you believe it?) which was only sold (i believe) in the south korean market - i picked it up for roughly £100 all the way back in 2018, when it was only a year or two old, and have used it on and off since then, I kept switching back to my "main" phone after a month or so of usage, and repeated this pretty much twice a year since 2018, i'm trying to make it stick this time.
the folder - using the square home launcher for android, very reminiscent of the windows phone ui (i miss it)
i'm aiming to achieve this by getting what's known as a garakei phone, or keitai - it's a japanese flip phone that runs a cut back version of android and forgoes the touchscreen, this makes a difference to how i interface with the folder 2, since it runs full android, and because of the touch screen and no pointer implementation, some apps work with the d-pad and some don't so i have to use the touchscreen, overall it makes for a very disjointed experience, which is part of the reason why i quit using it after a month - what's the point un using a flip phone and t9 keyboard if i have to use the touchscreen to get into things like whatsapp that i use on a daily basis? the keitai phones have pointers which can either be controlled via the dpad, or on some models (not the one im getting) you can use the t9 keyboard itself as a trackpad! how cool is that?
